The End of an Era

I think September is going to feel very different this year.

For the first time in a long time, it feels like our family is stepping into a completely new chapter.

My baby boy, Ben, has left primary school.

I still find it hard to believe.

The little boy who walked through those gates into Reception during lockdown has now walked out of them for the final time. A child who started school in such an unusual time, who had to navigate those first years with so much uncertainty, has grown into the most amazing young man.

Not once have we had a negative word said about him from a teacher. Not once. He has always been kind, caring, and thoughtful, and I couldn’t be prouder of the person he has become.

He has spent his whole primary school journey alongside some very special friends, too. Lillie-Rae and Braxton have been by his side since those early days. I hope those friendships continue for many years to come.

Then there’s Elizabeth.

My little girl has left the infants behind and is heading up to juniors.

Another milestone I didn’t think would arrive so quickly.

It feels like only yesterday I was walking her into those first classrooms. Now she’s ready for the next adventure. More independence, more challenges, more memories waiting to be made.

And while these two are moving on, the school itself is changing too.

The infant and junior schools that all four of my children have attended are closing as we know them. They’re amalgamating into one school with a new name. The signs will change. The name we’ve said for almost ten years will become something different. A little piece of our family’s history will become a memory.

Alex’s face has been on the school board since he was in reception. Now he’s about to start Year 9. It feels like the biggest reminder of just how quickly time passes.

Those school walls have held so many memories for us. First days. Last days. Christmas plays. Sports days. Lost jumpers. School Trips. Friendships. Proud moments.

They’ve watched all of my children grow. Luckily, most of the staff are staying, so they will continue to see Elizabeth move through primary school. Elizabeth’s year three teacher was Harrison’s year three teacher.

Of course, as well as this, we recently moved into our forever home.

September isn’t just the start of a new school year this time.

It feels like the start of a whole new era for our family.

And while there is definitely a little sadness in saying goodbye to what we know, there is so much excitement for what comes next.

Because as one chapter closes, another one is already waiting to begin.
