Celebrate Outdoor Play This Summer with Germolene | WIN A BAG OF OUTDOOR TOYS!!

The summer holidays are upon us.

Six or seven weeks of the kids being at home.

Whilst I love having the kids around, it can be really difficult at time to keep three boys, aged 7, 6 and 3 amused without spending a fortune.  I’m not alone in this, because according to surveys commissioned by Germolene, 47% of parents claim their biggest concern is the cost of a family day out, with the average parent spending £650 just on family trips during the six weeks off.

We’re really lucky to live by the beach, which does take a lot of pressure off us for big days out, but sometimes, we need a good old kick up the bum for inspiration. Germolene, a brand we ALWAYS have in the house to deal with cuts and scrapes, has released a fantastic guide, jam-packed with ideas to keep you going throughout the summer – and beyond.

In the bag of bits and pieces Germolene sent us along with the guide (how cute is the Watermelon cool bag, by the way? Perfect for picnics!), we had:

  • Skittles
  • Frisbee
  • Chalk
  • Coloured card
  • A notebook
  • A fishing net
  • Bucket, spade and sand molds
  • Bubbles
  • Paint
  • Sunflower kit

This is, for my three little beach boys, the perfect bag of toys. You see, to have fun outdoors, whether it’s on a beach, in the park or in your own back garden, you don’t need loads of expensive things. A few essentials can keep even the most demanding of kids happy and amused for hours. Benjamin and I headed down to Rhyl beach one evening – his brother’s were in bed, so we made the most of the peace and quiet and headed out for a game of skittles on the beach. He hasn’t quite got the hang of it yet, but he loved trying to knock them down!

Bubbles, of course, are a favourite with both kids and adults. There’s just something about blowing and popping bubbles!

The 90 Days of Summer book, which you can download for free by clicking here,  has so many ideas, most of which cost nothing, or next to nothing and need little in the way of preparation. Some of my favourites include:

  • Searching for ‘treasure’ on the beach – this is something we love to do all year round. It’s great looking for interesting rocks, shells and bits of sea glass.
  • Pebble art – making pictures on the sand with pebbles of all colours and shapes and sizes
  • Using chalk on the backyard – hours of artistic fun which gets washed away when it rains
  • Bug hunts – get close to the little creatures hiding in corners in the garden
  • Create sand slime – mixing sand, water, glue and liquid starch together to make slime

Having a bank of ideas has made me feel less anxious about the holidays and gave us plenty of ideas. Harrison and Alex have poured over the book (whilst we have had some much needed rain!) and made a list of the things they want to do in the next few weeks.
