5 easy ways to prepare your home for summer

Summer is almost here so why not take this opportunity to get your home ready for the warmer weather? From creating a cool and comfortable indoor environment, to reviving your garden and outdoor spaces, these five quick adjustments will help you quickly shape up your home so that you can enjoy summer in style and comfort.

Optimise your home’s cooling and ventilation

Summer in the UK has been getting hotter and hotter in recent years. Learning how to keep your home cool will come in handy not only for this season but also for creating good habits for future (possibly hotter) summers.

If you have an air conditioning unit, now is the time to make sure that it works and runs efficiently. Schedule a service well in advance of the heat peak.

If you don’t have air conditioning, that doesn’t mean you have to sweat and suffer. Opening windows strategically at certain times – early morning and at night – will create airflow and circulate fresh air naturally.

Ceiling and portable fans are also an energy-efficient way to improve ventilation. Here’s a neat trick to mimic air conditioning – place a bowl of ice in front of a fan and enjoy the icy breeze.

Rejuvenate your outdoor living space

When summer is finally here you want to be outside as much as possible, whether in your garden, patio, front porch, or balcony. Start planning now to transform these outdoor areas into relaxing retreats.

Take out your garden furniture and give it a good clean. You can also paint it in bright colours for a fun, whimsical look. Plant flowers in contrasting colours.

Summer evenings are for socialising. In addition to setting up a cosy seating area, create a magical ambience for guests by hanging up festoon garden lights overhead. They’ll add a warm and stylish glow for a memorable night.

Sort out potential pest issues

One downside of warmer weather is insects and household pests invading your home.

Take a few minutes to seal any cracks or gaps in doors and windows. You can also install insect screens on windows for extra protection.

Insects love food and crumbs. Keep food sealed or stored in tightly closed containers. Empty your bins regularly and keep outdoor spaces clean as well.

If you discover a persistent pest issue, seek out pest control services to get it under control in advance.

Protect your home from sun damage

Yes, even your house and home need to be protected from the sun’s rays. Furniture, wooden flooring, and furnishings can fade and lose their vibrancy if they’re exposed to sunlight.

Protect indoor spaces by closing blinds and drawing your curtains during peak sunlight periods. You can even go further and install temporary UV-resistant window films.

When you’re not using your outdoor furniture, keep it covered, or store it to prevent weather-related damage.

Review and enhance home security

No one loves summer more than opportunistic thieves. Windows are left open more frequently. Homeowners are outdoors, or away. It’s worth taking a bit of time to reassess security.

All your doors and windows should have secure locks. Make sure that they work. Also check alarms and security lights. In any case, even if you’re confident that the house is secure, don’t leave valuables in plain sight.

If you’re going on holiday, set timers for lights to come on at the right time so that it looks like someone is home.

Get your home summer-ready

You don’t need to do a major overhaul to prepare your home for summer. Just a few thoughtful checks and updates to cooling mechanisms, outdoor spaces, pest control, and security, can help you create an enjoyable space for the season ahead.
