Earlier this year, we discussed buying the boys a Scalextric for Christmas, but I wasn’t sure if it was something that was a little bit too old for them – I always think of Scalextric being for older kids. That dilemma was solved a couple of weeks ago when we were sent a My First Scalextric for them to play with.
Aimed at children aged 3 and above, the My First Scalextric is the perfect introduction to the much loved racing toy. Once it has been set up, the kids needed minimum input from me to play with it.
It’s simple enough to put together and feels relatively sturdy and stable. It comes with two cars and controls which are colour coordinated with the track, so the children knew which car was theirs.
It took them a little while to get used to the controls – too much speed and the cars go flying off the track. They do have adjustable power levels which are supposed to stop this from happening, but it still took some practice. Once they had mastered how much pressure they needed to use on the control, they played with it for hours.
I always thought Scalextric sets didn’t have a massive amount of play value – after all, they just go round the track, but actually, we’ve all had lots of fun with it as a family. It’s easy to pack away in the box when it’s been finished with – not that I’ve been allowed to put it away so far – and it’s not too noisy, which is always a bonus!
The My First Scalextric has an RRP of £29.98 and is available from Amazon.
